IN Paradise there are many Saints who never gave alms on earth their poverty justified them. There are many Saints who never mortified their bodies by fasting, or wearing hair shirts their bodily infirmities excused them. There are many Saints too who were not virgins their vocation was otherwise. But in Paradise there is no Saint who was not humble.

I came to this book via Caroline Myss speaking on Teresa of Avila who teaches humility as a first step. I was stunned to find that humility is rarely written about as a topic on its own, so this, written in the 18th century, was the most recent book I found that looked promising - and it delivers. The author gives a lot of food for thought on humility and pride. Truly, it is a lifetime of inspiration for contemplation and practice. The book is written as a series of points on pride and humility so that it can be read straight through, or used for occasional encouragement where you might choose any point to start reading and take just a little bit to consider. While there are references to specifically Christian things, that shouldn't stop a non-Christian from picking it up. As a Buddhist, I found many of the passages helpful in my own practice since Buddhism includes a great deal of introspection.
There is only one paragraph that is dated where he casts an unfavorable light on some other ethnic groups. This was surprising and must be a reflection of the times because, after reading the whole book, I'm convinced that if he were living today that those few sentences wouldn't have crept in because those thoughts would have been replaced by a broader world view. The rest of the book still stands as an excellent resource. So, you know, don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
Humility isn't encouraged in mainstream American culture much to our detriment. If you've made it this far - to land on this page and read these reviews - accept the gift that this book truly is. If you get the kindle version, you're out less than a dollar and you may just well change your life. I hope you read it. If a dollar is still too much, try the library or a Catholic church. Someone will help you get it. This is actually important.

Humility of Heart Fr Cajetan Mary da Bergamo Paul A Boer Sr 9781477613542 Books Reviews
Great book on humility and it is an advance teaching. I do really appreciate his ability to
break it down into simple every day terms and questions to ponder. It is a book to ponder
not to read through quickly. God bless, Charity and Grace
Book needs some serious editing. It was clearly scanned and not proofed. That said, it's a wonderful work on the virtue of humility.
The book covers so many emotions and examples of personal short-comings we must overcome on our journey towards eternity in Heaven. It could take years to fully appreciate and understand the depth of knowledge contained herein. If you want to develop your prayer life and grow ever closer to our Holy Trinity, this book will help.
If you are interested in developing your spiritual life this is a MUST. Be careful out there, there are many other "Humility of the Heart" books by the same author but are NOT the same ORIGINAL text. They have been edited, don't trust them. Get only the original.
excellent book for anyone set on purification of heart. Lot's of material to mediate on and open your soul that He might enter into and purge your soul of this world as only He may do. Living in this world today must be between God and self, and the darkness that the world has instilled in each of our souls must be purged for we all have built up within a way of not seeing "self" that even we are not aware of and refuse to look at unless we are "still" and come to KNOW that He alone is God, and only "HE" can bring a soul to perfection, "to be perfect" as His Father is perfect in a world that denies God. This is an uphill climb that few can make without silence built into their prayer life and a serious commitment to God to be still and know.
This is one of the better books for the spiritual life that I have read, and definitely a starting point for any spiritual progress. Besides that, there are so many great one-liners of wisdom, beginning with the first paragraph there are saints in Heaven who did not practice _______ (particular virtue) but they were excused for x reason. However there is no saint in Heaven who did not practice humility.
Also striking is when he invites the reader to consider the saints in Heaven and try to see which saint is most like his or herself, to get an idea of where the reader may be placed in Heaven. Curious enough we all seem to think that we will get to Heaven until we realize that there really isn't anyone in Heaven as corrupt as ourselves, or anyone in Heaven we can compare ourselves to.
This book was recommended by Fr. Chad Ripperger, and like all the books he recommends, it is life-changing. True humility is a virtue so few embrace and work for, and this book both describes what it is and how to foster it....and all in a beautifully engaging, truthful, and readable way. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
